Describing a life insurance or annuity policy that allows the policyholder to share in the insurer's surplus profits through dividends. These payments represent a return of a portion of the premiums paid and are based on the insurer's favorable operating experience, such as lower than expected mortality or higher investment returns. Dividends are not guaranteed and their amount and timing are determined by the insurer's board of directors.
