Preexisting condition

A health condition for which a person received medical advice or treatment before enrolling in a new health insurance plan. Historically, insurers often excluded coverage for these conditions or imposed waiting periods. Under the Affordable Care Act in the United States, most health plans cannot deny coverage or charge more due to preexisting conditions.
