Rip and tear coverage

An extension of coverage in a property insurance policy that pays for the cost of tearing out and replacing parts of a building to locate the source of a covered peril, such as a burst pipe. This coverage is typically limited to the expenses incurred in accessing the damaged area. It does not cover the damage caused by the peril itself, but the investigative costs.
