Jettison

The voluntary throwing overboard of cargo, equipment, or parts of a ship or aircraft to lighten the load or improve stability in an emergency. This action is taken to save the vessel and the remaining cargo from a greater peril. Losses incurred from jettison are generally covered under marine insurance policies as a form of general average.
