Secondary payer

An insurance plan or entity that pays for healthcare costs after the primary payer has paid its share. This coordination of benefits prevents duplicate payments for the same medical services. Medicare often acts as a secondary payer when an individual has other health coverage, such as employer-sponsored group health plans.
