Stop loss

A provision in an insurance policy or reinsurance treaty that limits the total amount of losses an insured or reinsured will have to bear in a given period. Once the aggregate losses exceed this predetermined limit, the insurer or reinsurer covers all additional losses up to the policy maximum. It protects against catastrophic or unexpectedly high claim volumes.
