Excess of loss reinsurance

A type of reinsurance agreement where the reinsurer indemnifies the ceding insurer for the amount of loss that exceeds a predetermined retention limit. The ceding insurer bears all losses up to this retention, and the reinsurer covers the remainder up to a specified maximum. This structure protects the primary insurer from catastrophic individual claims or aggregate losses.
