Catastrophe reinsurance

A form of reinsurance that protects primary insurers from accumulation of losses arising from a single catastrophic event. It provides coverage for losses exceeding a predetermined retention level, up to a specified limit. This type of reinsurance is typically structured on an excess-of-loss basis, where the reinsurer pays claims above a certain threshold.
