Nonproportional reinsurance
Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-002353
A type of reinsurance where the reinsurer's liability is not directly proportional to the original insurer's liability for each individual risk. Instead, the reinsurer pays only when losses exceed a predetermined amount, known as the retention or attachment point. This arrangement protects the primary insurer from large or catastrophic losses, such as those exceeding a certain dollar threshold per event.
