The specific dollar amount or threshold at which an excess-of-loss insurance or reinsurance policy begins to pay for losses. The insured or ceding insurer is responsible for losses up to this point, and the insurer or reinsurer covers losses exceeding it. This point defines the retention level of the primary insurer or insured.
