Ad litem

A designation for a person, typically an attorney, appointed by a court to represent the interests of another party who is unable to represent themselves in a particular lawsuit. This type of representative is most frequently appointed for a minor child in custody or abuse cases, or for an incapacitated adult. The appointed individual, known as a guardian ad litem, acts solely for the purposes of the litigation and their authority ends when the case concludes.
