Alluviation

The gradual and imperceptible increase of land on a bank or shore resulting from the natural deposit of sediment by the action of water. The owner of the land to which these deposits, known as alluvion, are added becomes the owner of the new land under the legal doctrine of accretion. This slow process is distinguished from avulsion, a sudden and perceptible change in a shoreline or river course which does not alter property boundaries.
