Riparian doctrine

A system of water law that grants landowners whose property abuts a natural watercourse the right to use the water. This doctrine is based on the principle that water rights are tied to the ownership of riparian land. It is prevalent in the eastern United States, often requiring reasonable use that does not unduly harm other riparian owners.
