Alter ego

A legal doctrine used to disregard the separate legal identity of a corporation or other entity and hold its owners or controlling persons personally liable for its debts or actions. This occurs when the entity is so controlled and dominated by its owners that it essentially functions as their personal extension. Courts apply this doctrine to prevent fraud or injustice.
