Attempt

An inchoate crime consisting of an intent to commit a specific offense and an overt act taken toward its commission, but falling short of completing the crime. The act must be a substantial step toward the commission of the crime, not mere preparation. Penalties for attempt are typically less severe than for the completed offense.
