A common law offense involving three or more persons who assemble with the intent to commit an unlawful act, and who make some motion toward its execution, but do not actually carry it out. It is an intermediate stage between an unlawful assembly and a riot. This offense is less severe than a riot, which requires actual execution of the unlawful purpose.
