Breach of promise
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-000778
The failure to fulfill a commitment or assurance, particularly in the context of a promise to marry. Historically, this was a cause of action allowing a party to sue for damages if their fiancé broke off an engagement without justification. Most jurisdictions have abolished this cause of action due to its potential for abuse and its antiquated nature.
