Breathalyzer

An instrument that estimates a person's blood alcohol concentration from the alcohol in a breath sample. The original Breathalyzer relied on a chemical reaction, while current devices use infrared absorption or electrochemical fuel cells. Readings are used as evidence in drunk driving prosecutions, where a concentration of 0.08 percent or more establishes the per se offense in nearly all states.
