Capital gains

The profit realized from the sale of a capital asset, such as stocks, bonds, or real estate, where the selling price exceeds the original purchase price plus other costs. Tax laws distinguish between short-term gains on assets held for one year or less and long-term gains on assets held for more than a year. In the United States, long-term capital gains are taxed at a lower rate than ordinary income.
