Cost basis

The original value of an asset for tax purposes, adjusted for factors like commissions, stock splits, or reinvested dividends. This figure is used to calculate capital gains or losses when the asset is sold. For inherited property, the cost basis is typically the fair market value at the time of the decedent's death.
