Capital asset

Property owned by an individual or corporation that is not held for sale in the ordinary course of business. Examples include real estate, stocks, bonds, and equipment used in a business. Gains or losses from the sale of capital assets are subject to specific tax treatment, often at different rates than ordinary income.
