An individual entitled to receive a portion of an estate's assets after a person dies without a valid will, or when a will does not fully dispose of all property. The identity of these individuals is determined by the laws of intestacy in the relevant jurisdiction. State statutes specify the order of priority for heirs, such as spouses, children, and other relatives.
