Excise tax

A tax imposed on the manufacture, sale, or use of specific goods or services within a country. Unlike a general sales tax, an excise tax targets particular items, such as fuel, tobacco products, or alcoholic beverages. These taxes are often used to generate revenue or to discourage consumption of certain products.
