Expropriation

The act by a government or public authority of taking privately owned property for public use, with or without compensation to the owner. This power is often exercised under eminent domain laws, which require fair market value to be paid for the property. International law also addresses expropriation, particularly when a state takes property owned by foreign nationals or entities.
