Eminent domain

The power of the government to take private property for public use, even if the owner does not wish to sell. This power is enshrined in the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which requires that 'just compensation' be paid to the property owner. Public use can include infrastructure projects like roads, schools, or utilities.
