Foreign Corrupt Practices Act

A United States federal statute that prohibits American companies and individuals from bribing foreign government officials to obtain or retain business. The Act also includes accounting provisions requiring companies to maintain accurate books and records. It applies to both direct and indirect payments made to foreign officials.
