Grantor-retained annuity trust

An irrevocable trust established by a grantor who transfers assets into the trust and retains the right to receive a fixed annuity payment for a specified term. At the end of the term, any remaining assets in the trust pass to the beneficiaries, often with reduced gift tax implications. This estate planning tool is used to transfer wealth to heirs with minimal tax liability.
