Grantor-retained trust

A type of irrevocable trust where the grantor transfers assets into the trust but retains an income interest or an annuity interest for a specified term. The primary purpose is to remove assets from the grantor's taxable estate while allowing the grantor to benefit from the assets for a period. These trusts include grantor-retained annuity trusts and grantor-retained unitrusts.
