Hearing

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002412

A formal proceeding before a court, administrative agency, or other decision-making body where parties present evidence and arguments on specific legal or factual issues. Unlike a full trial, a hearing is often shorter and addresses a narrower set of questions, such as a motion to suppress evidence, a bail application, or a dispute before an administrative law judge. The rules of evidence are sometimes applied less strictly in a hearing than in a trial, and the outcome is a ruling or order on the specific matter addressed.
