Homestead Act

A series of United States federal laws enacted in the 19th century that allowed citizens to claim public land for farming and settlement. Claimants could acquire up to 160 acres of land by living on it, cultivating it for a specified period, and making improvements. The original Act of 1862 was a major driver of westward expansion and land distribution in the United States.
