Incapacitation

The act of rendering a person unable to perform a certain function, or the state of being so disabled. In criminal justice, it is a goal of sentencing that aims to prevent a convicted offender from committing future crimes by removing them from society, typically through imprisonment. This sentencing philosophy is distinct from rehabilitation, which seeks to reform the offender, and retribution, which focuses on punishment for past acts.
