Retributivism

A theory of justice that holds that punishment should be imposed on an offender as a deserved consequence for their wrongdoing, proportionate to the severity of the crime. This approach focuses on past actions and the concept of 'just deserts,' rather than on deterrence or rehabilitation. It is often contrasted with utilitarian theories of punishment.
