Graham v. Florida (2010)

A United States Supreme Court ruling that determined sentencing a juvenile offender to life in prison without the possibility of parole for a non-homicide crime is unconstitutional. The Court held that such a sentence constitutes cruel and unusual punishment, violating the Eighth Amendment. This decision requires that juvenile offenders convicted of crimes other than murder must be given a meaningful opportunity to obtain release based on demonstrated maturity and rehabilitation.
