Informed consent doctrine

A legal and ethical principle requiring that a person be given sufficient information about a proposed medical treatment, procedure, or research study to make a voluntary and educated decision. This includes understanding the nature of the intervention, its risks, benefits, and alternatives. The patient must have the capacity to make such a decision, and consent must be freely given.
