Jus cogens

A peremptory norm of general international law that is universally accepted by the community of nations as binding on all states, irrespective of their consent. Such norms cannot be superseded by treaties or local custom, and any conflicting law is considered void. Prohibitions against genocide, slavery, and wars of aggression are widely recognized examples of jus cogens.
