Mortmain

The perpetual holding of land by a corporation or other entity that does not have a natural end, preventing the land from being alienated or passing to heirs. Historically, this referred to land held by religious institutions, which was exempt from feudal services and taxes. English statutes of mortmain were enacted to limit such holdings.
