The passing of property, rights or duties from one person to another by operation of law, as when title to a deceased owner's land transfers to the heirs or to a personal representative. Unlike a sale or gift, it needs no voluntary act by the owner. Intestacy statutes decide to whom a decedent's property devolves when there is no will.
