A person who has died. The term is used in legal contexts, particularly in estate law and probate proceedings, to refer to the individual whose property and affairs are being administered. The estate of the deceased, also called the decedent, is distributed to heirs and beneficiaries according to the terms of a will or, in its absence, by the laws of intestacy.
