National Security Letter

An administrative subpoena issued by federal agencies, primarily the FBI, to compel individuals or organizations to provide customer records, financial data, or other information relevant to national security investigations. These letters typically include a gag order prohibiting the recipient from disclosing that the request was made. NSLs do not require prior judicial approval.
