Occupy the field

A doctrine in constitutional law where federal law is so pervasive, dominant, or detailed that it leaves no room for state regulation in a particular area. This preemption prevents states from enacting laws that would interfere with the federal scheme. The intent to occupy the field may be explicit in the federal statute or inferred from its structure and purpose.
