A resolution of a legal dispute reached by the parties involved without going to a full trial or having a judge or jury decide the outcome. This includes settlements negotiated between attorneys, mediation, or arbitration proceedings. An out-of-court settlement results in the dismissal of the lawsuit and is legally binding once agreed upon by all parties and formalized in a written agreement.
