Describing a legal status or role where an individual or entity does not actively participate or initiate action, but rather is subject to the actions of others or has limited involvement. This can apply to income, investments, or the role of a party in a legal dispute. Passive income, for example, is earnings derived from a rental property or a business in which one is not actively involved.
