Presiding judge

The judge who supervises the conduct of a trial or hearing, maintaining order and ruling on procedural matters and admissibility of evidence. This individual directs the proceedings from the bench and instructs the jury on points of law. In appellate courts, the presiding judge leads the panel and often assigns the writing of opinions.
