Court witness
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001370
A witness in a legal proceeding who is called to testify by the presiding judge rather than by either the prosecution or the defense. This is an uncommon procedure, invoked when the judge believes the witness has relevant information that neither party has chosen to present. The judge can question the witness, and then both parties are typically given the opportunity for cross-examination.
