Direct examination

The questioning of a witness by the attorney who called that witness to testify in a trial or hearing. The purpose is to elicit facts relevant to the case and present the witness's testimony clearly to the judge or jury. Leading questions are generally prohibited during direct examination, requiring the attorney to ask open-ended questions.
