Material witness

An individual whose testimony is highly relevant and necessary to the outcome of a legal proceeding. Their knowledge of facts or circumstances directly pertains to the issues in dispute and cannot be obtained from other sources. Courts may issue a warrant to secure the appearance of a material witness if there is a risk they will not testify voluntarily.
