Character witness

A person who testifies in court about the good reputation or moral standing of another individual, rather than about facts directly related to the crime or dispute. This testimony aims to persuade the judge or jury that the individual is unlikely to have committed the alleged offense or acted in a certain way. Such testimony is usually presented during sentencing or in cases where character is directly at issue.
