Putative

Describing a status, relationship, or fact that is reputed or believed to exist, but has not been legally proven or established. The term is used to qualify a noun, indicating that the assertion is alleged or supposed rather than definitively confirmed. For example, a 'putative father' is a man alleged to be the biological father of a child, a status that requires legal adjudication through a paternity action to become official.
