Putative spouse doctrine

A legal principle that grants marital rights to a person who has a good faith belief that they are lawfully married, even if the marriage is later found to be legally invalid. This doctrine protects individuals who entered into a marriage ceremony without knowledge of an impediment, such as a prior undissolved marriage.
