Enoch Arden doctrine

A legal principle that allows for the dissolution of a marriage when one spouse has been absent and unheard from for a statutorily defined period, typically seven years. This doctrine permits the remaining spouse to remarry without fear of bigamy charges, assuming a good faith belief that the absent spouse is deceased. Many jurisdictions have specific procedures for declaring an absent spouse legally dead.
